Happy Spring!

Posted on: March 20, 2011

“Behold, my friends, the spring is come; the earth has gladly received the embraces of the sun, and we shall soon see the results of their love!  Sitting Bull

Our spirits start to lighten as the darkness of winter recedes and the light expands in the northern hemisphere.  As blustery March winds blow, they herald the arrival of spring.  The barrenness of winter slowly retreats, and we look forward to the lush green landscape that envelops us in spring.   The earth slowly awakens from the dormancy of winter’s dark days as the shift in her energy gently wafts into our consciousness naturally igniting our desire for renewal.  The cycle of rebirth continues as new growth is sparked beneath the dark soil.  Though much of her transformation has been invisible to the naked eye, we trust that the evidence of her unbounded love will soon appear.

The melodies of chirping birds, green buds bursting upon the land, and the fresh spring air cultivate hope and optimism in us.  A feeling of renewal inspires creativity and growth.  One day it will suddenly appear as if an artist’s brush has painted over the drabness of winter and replaced it with the brilliance of spring.  Nature’s subtle transition to her new façade is a result of the tiny changes hidden in plain view that are occurring every day.  Nature’s slow transition from winter to spring is a beautiful lesson in patience and transformation that can be applied to our lives.  Nature takes her time and gracefully changes.  Suddenly, one day we are aware of the magnitude of her transformation as we notice the landscape has been decorated in the radiant colors of spring.  As we witness her splendor, it is comforting to think that human beings are a part of nature.  When you choose to slowly incorporate changes into your life while nurturing yourself, you are capable of your own magnificent transformation.

If we are living in synchronicity with nature’s rhythms, it is natural to be filled with optimism and a desire for rejuvenation and growth in spring.  We intuitively want to leave the weightiness of winter behind us.  The warm, heavy foods that sustained us and kept us warm during the dark winter months lose their appeal.  We look forward to shedding our winter coats and savoring warmer weather.  Traditionally, spring cleaning is a part of this seasonal transition.  We yearn to follow our heart’s desires and unburden our lives by cleaning out and letting go of old habits, thoughts, and objects we’ve become attached to.  Harnessing the hopefulness and creativity that permeates the spring air can facilitate your personal transformation.

In today’s modern society we’ve lost our connection with our natural instincts.  Though our inclinations may be to clean out our thoughts, our minds, and our bodies with the advent of spring, we may disregard our natural yearnings in favor of clinging to behaviors that we’ve become accustomed to.  We get in the habit of eating the same types of foods year round instead of eating in the tradition of our ancestors who had no choice but to eat what was locally grown and available seasonally.  As the warmer temperatures return, eating lighter fare like leafy greens, sprouts, and salads as well as fewer cooked foods naturally appeals to us.  If you’ve been eating the same foods all year, you may not even recognize that you have a desire for lighter foods.

During the cold weather, many of us hibernate and only venture outside when absolutely necessary.  If we’ve become conditioned to this behavior, it may not even dawn on us that a beautiful spring day is a great time to re-connect with nature.  If you’re able, taking a short walk can invigorate you.  Leaving your cell phone and music player behind will help ensure that you are truly in the moment and savor the experience.  Any walk is a good walk in my book, but a walk in nature nourishes the mind and spirit in addition to the body.  Walking in the woods or on a beach will truly allow you to absorb the essence of nature’s energy to lift your mood and refresh you.  The natural terrain of a wooded trail or a sandy beach provides the opportunity to enjoy a more strenuous workout in addition to removing you from the distractions encountered when walking on a busy road.  Take advantage of the expanded daylight and go for an early morning or early evening walk.  If your health does not allow you to walk, just sitting outside and absorbing the sun and breathing the fresh air can be revitalizing.  Taking the time to savor a sunrise or sunset makes me feel connected to something amazing and much greater than myself.

Take advantage of the optimism of the season to change the voices in your head.  Maybe your heart’s longing to do something that seems illogical to you because you’ve never done it before.  Instead of squashing that yearning, plant the seed of that thought and nurture it.  Years ago prior to embarking on my 100 Pounds Weight Loss Journey, an acquaintance asked me to accompany her to Whole Foods Market, a place I had never visited.  I vividly remember walking down the aisles awestruck as I looked at the beautiful produce and the many other items throughout the store that were foreign to me.  At the time I was unexplainably drawn to the energy in the store.  I didn’t know what to buy since I was still a junk food queen and made several subsequent trips without purchasing anything.  I just loved being in the store and kept following my heart instead of allowing my mind to tell me that I didn’t belong there.  I gradually learned about all kinds of healthy new foods and began buying them there.  Today, it is where we do most of our shopping and a place we always visit when we’re on vacation.

I invite you to embrace the energy of renewal and plant seeds of change to nurture with love and kindness during this season of growth.  Release the negative, heavy thoughts that are weighing you down and preventing you from moving forward.  Think positive, inspiring thoughts that will propel you in the direction of your heart’s longings.  Use the uplifting energy of spring to experiment with lighter foods, create optimistic and hopeful thoughts, and spend time in nature.  Treating yourself with kindness will ease your transition to a healthy lifestyle.  Be patient and trust that making small improvements in your life will eventually result in your amazing and sustainable transformation.  There’s nothing like a beautiful spring day to give you the feeling you’re capable of doing anything you put your mind to.  In addition, I invite you to forward this blog to your friends and sign up for weekly e-mail updates at www.belightandhealthy.com to get informed and inspired to Be Light and Healthy.  When you sign up, you will receive an e-mail requesting you confirm your subscription.  After you confirm, you will begin receiving weekly updates.
